چکیده

The observation of electron emission from amorphous carbon thin films at low applied electric fields is explained in terms of an enhancement of the field brought about by dielectric inhomogeneities within the film. These inhomogeneities originate from the differences between conductive, spatially localized sp C clusters surrounded by a more insulating sp matrix. By a more complete understanding of the concentration and distribution of the clusters, a generic model for field emission from amorphous carbon thin films can be developed. Extensions of this model to explain the emission properties of carbon nanotubes and carbon nanocomposite materials are also presented. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1366369#

Thickness dependency of field emission in amorphous and nanostructured carbon thin films

Thickness dependency of the field emission of amorphous and nanostructured carbon thin films has been studied. It is found that in amorphous and carbon films with nanometer-sized sp2 clusters, the emission does not depend on the film thickness. This further proves that the emission happens from the surface sp2 sites due to large enhancement of electric field on these sites. However, in the case...

Stress-induced electron emission from nanocomposite amorphous carbon thin films

Traditionally, the emission of electrons from materials have been explained using either the Fowler– Nordheim emission mechanism where high electric fields are used to extract electrons from surfaces or using conventional thermal emission where high currents are used to ‘‘boil’’ off electrons to vacuum. In this letter, we propose an alternative mechanism for electron emission from highly compre...

A study of electron field emission as a function of film thickness from amorphous carbon films

The electron field-emission properties of hydrogenated amorphous carbon and nitrogenated tetrahedral amorphous carbon thin films are examined by measuring the field-emission current as a function of the applied macroscopic electric field. The experimental results indicate the existence of an optimum film thickness for low-threshold electron field emission. The predictions of various emission mo...

Modeling of the electron field emission process in polycrystalline diamond and diamond-like carbon thin films

Electron field emission has been observed from carbon thin films at relatively low electric fields. These films range from amorphous carbon to polycrystalline diamond films. There are many models that attempt to account for the electron field emission process observed in these films. The initial models that were based on the emission due purely to a negative electron affinity have now been modi...

Conditioning of hydrogenated amorphous carbon thin films for field emission via current stressing

The effects of electrical current stressing on the field emission characteristics of hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) thin films are reported. In these a-C:H films an initial conditioning treatment of the film is often required before the onset of stable emission and only after several voltage cycles do the values of the threshold field tend to converge. By stressing of the film by applyin...
